New graduate student, Jacob Smith, led the charge on a GPR survey of one of California's largest coastal dune fields - Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes during a field trip for Geomorphology (GEOG 4020). He is investigating the stratigraphic architecture of the dunes and paleodepositional environments of the Santa Maria Valley using the GPR profile data.   

Dr. Kelly, Tim Clarke (MS student), and Suvam Patel (former MS student) led graduate students enrolled in GEOL 5700 (Drones in Earth Science) on a field trip to Crystal Cove State Park where they conducted UAS and RTK-GPS surveys of the beach. The data will be used to generate an ultra-high resolution topographic model to assess geomorphic change.

Dr. Kelly and Tim Clarke (M.S. Geology) conducted field work at Convict Lake, CA (Eastern Sierra). They conducted multispectral drone and bathymetric surveys of the lake in support of Tim's thesis project. 

Suvam Patel successfully defended his M.S. thesis, "AUTOMATED SHORELINE EXTRACTION USING PLANET IMAGERY AND MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES IN GOOGLE EARTH ENGINE". Well done, Suvam!

Dr. Kelly was an expert witness on Fox 11 News to discuss the potential causes and future likelihood of landslides in Palos Verdes, CA. Check out the clip here! 

Suvam Patel (M.S. Environmental Science) presented his work on automating shoreline mapping using PlanetScope imagery at AGU in Chicago. Well done, Suvam!

Dr. Kelly participated in the 4th block of the Juneau Icefield Research Program where he gave lectures on glacial geology and remote sensing topics.
